It is situated in the San Gorgonio Pass, also known as Banning Pass. It is named for its founder, Phineas Banning, stagecoach line owner and the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles." Making up part of an area known as the "Inland Empire", Banning is located 257 miles southeast of Las Vegas, 85 miles east of the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, and 101 miles north of San Diego.
